My Cousin Can Do It!
…but your wedding day should never be a dress rehearsal
Dear couples and friends,
every family has someone who is “pretty good at that sort of thing”. The relative who is passionate about photography, the friend who creates unforgettable playlists, or the acquaintance who makes beautiful cakes for birthdays and anniversaries. And when a wedding is being planned, one legendary phrase often comes up: “Why pay a professional? My cousin can do it!”.
This famous Cousin – or “Cuggino”, as we jokingly call him in Italian, with an extra “g” to make him sound even more legendary – is almost always driven by the best intentions. He wants to help you, save you some money and contribute to your special day. The problem, however, is not how much he cares about you. The real point is this: on such an important day, you cannot simply hope that everything will go well.
Passion and professionalism are not the same thing
Having talent, enthusiasm or good equipment does not necessarily mean knowing how to work at a wedding. A professional does not simply complete a task: they understand the timing of the event, know how to coordinate with the other suppliers, anticipate potential issues and act quickly whenever something changes.
A professional photographer knows how to handle difficult lighting, unrepeatable moments and unexpected conditions. An experienced DJ checks the sound system, connections and schedule in advance, but above all knows how to read the room and guide each stage of the celebration. A specialist pastry chef does not simply create a beautiful cake: they also take care of its transport, storage, stability and service.
Your wedding day is not the right time to discover whether someone is truly ready to take on that responsibility.
Unexpected problems cannot be solved with hope
A DJ console that suddenly stops working, a damaged memory card, a wedding cake that cannot cope with the heat or a delay that changes the entire schedule: these situations can happen even when everything has been planned carefully. Trust me, they happen more often than you might imagine… and the difference is made by the person who knows how to respond.
Relying on a beginner often means having no backup plan, no spare equipment and no trusted network of professionals to contact in an emergency. This is where the true value of experience comes into play: not in promising that nothing will go wrong, but in being able to protect the event whatever happens.
The role of the wedding planner
As a wedding planner, my role is to select reliable professionals, make sure every service is suitable for your needs and coordinate everyone involved. I do not choose a supplier simply because they are talented: I assess their punctuality, experience, organisation, compatibility with the overall project and ability to work as part of a team.
During the wedding, I manage the schedule, the set-up and every operational detail, so you do not have to chase anyone, solve problems or keep wondering whether everything is under control.
Your job is to enjoy the celebration. I will take care of everything else.
This does not mean excluding friends and relatives. On the contrary, it means allowing them to be truly present. The Cousin who loves photography can capture spontaneous moments with a smartphone. The friend who is passionate about music can suggest the songs that represent you best. Creative guests can contribute ideas and personal touches.
But they can do so without carrying the burden of a responsibility that could turn a loving gesture into a source of stress.
A wedding is not an experiment, nor is it an opportunity to “see how it goes”. It is a unique event, built with time, emotion and significant investment. And it deserves experienced people who can turn every plan into something you can truly rely on.
With love,
Francesco – FM Wedding and Events
